After
earning her BSED (Bachelor of Science in Education) at Illinois
State University in 1978, Deb spent eight years teaching and
coaching in New Mexico schools. Leaving the
teaching field, she entered the corporate arena where the educator
in her continued to emerge. During this ten-year
period, she became engaged in staff training and development for
American Heart Association and the University of
Phoenix. She also trained and managed sales teams
for The Equitable Financial Services. It was
during this decade that she developed her corporate skills, some of
which were acquired when she attended graduate school, earning 24
hours toward her master’s degree in coaching, counseling, and
management.
Driven to become independent,
she started her own company Expanding Horizons in 1990 in
which she focused on helping teens. In 1992 she
broadened her outreach by creating Breakthrough Learning Systems,
Inc. (BLS), where the board-breaking activity became her
hallmark. The goal of BLS was “to offer
experiences and insights that inspire, inform, and empower others to
pursue their dreams, live fully empowered and passionate lives, and
share with the world their greatest human potential.”
As a speaker, consultant, and trainer, Deb often said, “I’m a
professional accomplice. I help people plan and
execute their own jail break.” Her message is:
“Escape the limiting beliefs that imprison you and scuttle your
success—that’s what it takes to transform your life from ordinary to
extraordinary.”
Three years later, building upon her
background in the public schools and corporate America, she launched
ICAN Institute, which she operates today out of her office in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. She travels nationwide
inspiring audiences with her “Can Do” messages.
Over the past decade, she has spoken to audiences from coast
to coast. Tens of thousands of people have
benefited from her programs.
Because of her love for teens, Deb still
conducts her board-breaking program for youth.
However, the lion’s share of her business is now conducted in
the corporate arena where she assists corporations in building
successful teams and empowering personnel by serving them as a
personal success coach, a business consultant, a PR specialist, and
a staff trainer.
