3 Mistakes Women Make When Setting Goals – And What You Can Do About It
The New Year is almost here, and it’s the most popular time of year to make resolutions.
You know, those things that are supposed to make this year the best one yet.
But does anyone EVER resolve to follow-through on resolutions? And don’t this year’s resolutions feel hauntingly familiar? The same ones you made last year, and the year before, and the year before…?
Don’t feel bad – you’re certainly not alone in this demoralizing pattern. In fact, about 87% of people who set goals fail… and 90% of those folks fail in the first two weeks.
If that statistic upsets you, wait until you hear this: women fail at THREE TIMES (3X) the rate of men. That’s faster, harder and more disappointingly so.
I feel your pain: when I read that alarming piece of information, at first I was devastated. And then I turned to neuroscience, because I knew there had to be a good reason for this unsettling phenomenon. I made it my mission to crack code of why women fail at reaching their goals.
Unsurprisingly, the hunt lead me somewhere very familiar: the unconscious mind. The seat of old, sabotaging patterns and habits that we are compelled to repeat that go all the way back to our childhoods. So if you’re not getting the results you want, the good news is it’s not your fault.
The even better news is that your brain has neuroplasticity, which means you can consciously rewire it to create the outcomes you desire.
But first you must understand the three critical mistakes that women make that derail our ability to achieve our goals. If you’re like me, once you see the pitfalls clearly, you’ll be raring to learn exactly how to shift from fear to confidence to have the business – and life – you desire and deserve.
MISTAKE #1: We set the wrong goals.
By “wrong” goals, I mean ones that are so big that they terrify us. We just don’t believe we can ever get to that impossible place, and then that disbelief pokes holes in the self-confidence, energy and enthusiasm we need to even pull up to the gates – never mind burst through them. Alternatively, we set goals that are too small and simplistic. In that case, it’s impossible to conjure up the passion and juice necessary to really get going. This is why we often set the same goals year in and year out.
MISTAKE #2: We set goals that aren’t in alignment with who we are as women.
In sales and network marketing especially, we often set goals that are in alignment with how men do things. Men tend to have a black and white, linear, forceful focus and energy (i.e., “I’m going to just make it happen,” “it’s a numbers game”) whereas women have more of a flow that springs from a well of attraction, where we build community, strive for win-win solutions and seek emotional satisfaction. To men, it’s not personal, it’s business. But to women, business is personal.
MISTAKE #3: We get off to a slow start.
There’s research to support that once you have an idea and are inspired to act, it’s imperative to move swiftly and decisively, within 24 hours. Men are wired to leap right into action, and that’s a huge advantage towards goal attainment. But once you pause to deliberate, postpone or otherwise procrastinate, you’re sending your brain a message that you’re not that serious about your goals. This analysis paralysis is a very female attribute – we prefer to think things through and not be so impulsive. And so the door to doubt, fear, distraction and critical thinking that springs from your past opens wide in your present and then quickly slams shut on your ability to deliver a different future. In other words, the slow start ends up being a swift, premature finish.
