While I often talk about how every single thought counts (link to that blog), what I’m really talking about is how to make a conscious choice between failure and success in your business.

And the key to making that crucial selection?

Your ability to work from a place of confidence, every single time.

Keep in mind that confidence isn’t actually a thought – it’s a feeling.

It’s a sense of certainty, which moves from sensation to emotion…

… to decisive, positive action.

A good way to think about confidence is to imagine a scale.

On the negative end, a -10 represents a high level of doubt.

And on the other end, a +10 indicates extreme confidence

What are the words that describe each end of the spectrum?

On doubt side, your thoughts look like this: I can’t. I won’t. I’m not enough. It will never happen. Why even bother?

On the confidence side, your thoughts say: I can. I will. I am enough. I deserve this!

Now that you can visualize the difference between doubt and confidence, I’m going to share with you what Martin Seligman, a University of Pennsylvania professor who is considered the founding father of the positive psychology movement, calls the “3 Ps,”, which help us deal with challenges and setbacks:

  • Permanence
  • Personalization
  • Pervasiveness

The delineation between those who operate from a place of doubt and those who come from a place of confidence is clear:

Doubters think:

  • It’ll always look this way – it’s always been this way – it’s hopeless to think it’ll ever change. (Permanence)
  • It’s my fault. I did this. I can’t do better. (Personalization)
  • It’s everywhere. Nobody wants to play with me. I’ll never find anyone that will sign up for my program. (Pervasiveness)

Confident people, on the other hand, think:

  • This isn’t going to last, it’s short term. (Temporary)
  • This isn’t about me, this about the other person. Maybe she just had a bad day. (Not personal)
  • It’s not expansive; it’s just this one specific situation. (Local)

Imagine approaching your business with the 3 Ps weighing you down – what would happen to your sales figures?

They would plummet.

And when you walk away from a challenging situation from a confident place thinking, oh well, it’s only this one person… no big deal … the next time will be different….

Don’t you feel the lightness in that approach?

And how easy would it be to rebound and move on to success?

Getting to that positive self-talk may seem daunting, but I have a couple of proven strategies that can make it simple for you.

Wonderstorming and what-iffing.

  • Wonderstorming is what happens when you introduce doubt… to doubt. For example, if you think, “I can’t do that,” but then you think, “but I wonder, what if I actually COULD do that?” What you’re left with is a positive brainstorm of wondering – a wonderstorm that leads you out of the darkness and into the light of possibility.
  • What-iffing is what you can do when you push past the thoughts that challenge you and continue on to “what if” scenarios: What if I didn’t quit today and tomorrow I recruited that hot shot that changes everything for me? What would that look like and feel like for you?

Both of these positivity-attracting actions have the same important effect: they open up space for confidence to come in.
